Despite the many Godzilla and Jurassic Park references in Toy Story, Rex isn't a real monster, just a toy. As he admitted to Woody, with every scare attempt, he was mostly " just coming off as annoying." His most effectively terrifying moments were just happy accidents, such as when he defeated Zurg in Toy Story 2 with a swipe of his tail. Rex tried on multiple occasions to scare his friends without success. However, Rex failing his audition continued one of his main goals throughout the Toy Story movies: his desire to be scary. outtake, Rex anxiously asked the director, "Was I scary? Did I get the part?" he ultimately didn't get cast for the role of Ted. Sadly, when at the end of his Monsters Inc. since the Pixar Universe Theory suggests close ties between the worlds of the two films, with both Sid and Andy having their own personal monsters. Rex could have been a good fit for Monsters Inc. If Ted had been given Godzilla's terrifying roar instead of his disarming chicken voice, it might have undercut Monsters Inc.'s most endearing premise about countering stereotypes of monsters. Despite the monsters' fear of children in Monsters Inc., the citizens were shown with jobs as scare technicians, as well as exercising, having friends, and generally having the same everyday lives as humans. In the end, it actually made the character fit better into the world of the movie. went with the next best thing: a chicken's squawk. So, instead of Godzilla's screeching roar, Monsters Inc. Without the rights from Toho, Pixar couldn't risk making their Godzilla reference obvious. Originally, the director, Pete Docter, wanted to make the reference even more obvious by using Godzilla's iconic roar.
To anyone familiar with pop-culture monsters, Ted is clearly a reference to Godzilla. played with Rex's ironic personality by temporarily casting him in the role of Ted the monster in one of Monsters Inc.'s "outtakes." As Mike and Sulley made their way to work early on in Monsters Inc., they found themselves standing by the giant scaly leg of Ted at a pedestrian crossing, and Sulley shouted a greeting at him.
